DeadLight - VR Experiance

Created Winter Semester 2022/23

This VR experience was a solo project, focusing on learning Unreal Engine and Blender. The goal was to recreate a horror setting inspired by a Cthulhu Mythos from H.P. Lovecraft.

Story

The application takes place around 1920 during a thunderstorm, along a lost roadside in a small diner.
The User wakes up after a car crash, leafing them disoriented. Throughout the experience, the goal would be to figure out the story by using clues left around the diner and surrounding area.

If they succeed in time, the Dead Light won't consume the player.

Focusing on environmental storytelling and invoking a sense of stress and panic.

Enviroment

The focus when designing the environment was to ensure visual consistency. This was mainly achieved through the use of Unreal Engine models from Quixel and the use of appropriate textures. The use of rain particles and fog is intended to make the user feel more uncomfortable and lure them into the diner.

Diner Development

The goal was to create a 1920 inspired diner. Diners were once simple train wagons that were placed on the roadside. Later a hard base would be built around it and oftentimes more buildings would connect to the diner later on.

To achieve this, multiple reiteration of different design needed to be done.

The inside of the diner was also modeled after images of old diner cars. Even though jukeboxes were not widely available during the 1920 one was put inside the diner to create an even more eerie surroundings playing distorted music.
